Our top things to do in Chelsea

Whether you live in the city, or just visiting London as a tourist, there is so much to see and do, it can be difficult to know where to start. Many people will associate Chelsea with reality television, the flower show or, for some, football, but wouldn’t necessarily think of making it part of their visit.

This would be a mistake though – it is an area with much interest and a great place to spend the day. For the ‘inside track’ on how best to take advantage of the area, we asked the people who are really ‘in the know’ – the staff from our storage company in Chelsea itself. Here are their informed recommendations:

Shops

London is, of course, famous for its’ shopping facilities – but it’s not confined to Oxford Street and surrounding area. Chelsea is one of London’s most affluent areas and is renowned for its fashionable and trendy boutiques.

The King’s Road and Duke of York Square are littered with well -known names from the high street, whilst Sloane Street plays host to stores such as Tiffany, Hermes, Cartier and Prada.

Royal hospital

How about a guided tour around Royal Hospital Chelsea? A resident Chelsea Pensioner can walk you around the beautiful historical buildings and regale you with stories of the architectural history and the some of the fascinating inhabitants of the hospital over the years.

Food

Take your pick really!

Whether you’re after fine dining – Gordon Ramsey’s 3-Michelin-starred restaurant, amongst other high-end eateries – or something classy, but more casual, like VQ – or top oriental cuisine, like Kurobuta, there is a wealth of choice. For daytime dining there are some fabulous venues for breakfast, brunch and lunch including those regularly frequented by the stars of, and featured in, the reality show Made in Chelsea, such as Bluebird and Tom’s Kitchen amongst many other lovely venues.

Drink

When it comes to a trip to the pub, Chelsea is more than comfortably furnished – everything from old, traditional pubs such as the Chelsea Potter, through quality gastro pubs, such as The Harwood Arms right up to the trendy, smart venues like The Hollywood Arms – there’s a pub for every occasion here!

Late nightlife

After-hours entertainment doesn’t come cheap in Chelsea – but the area does offer some vibrant and exciting nightclubs – Embargo, Raffles and JuJu being the better known venues.

Theatre

The Royal Court Theatre regularly features new works from home-grown and international talent, offering some fascinating cutting-edge theatre.

Concerts

Cadogan Hall is the home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and there is a constantly changing programme of music of all genres to attend – from classical, contemporary, folk and even jazz!

Art

If it’s contemporary art you are interested in, then located just off Sloane Square, is the Saatchi Gallery housing one of the finest collections and regular exhibitions – and you can wander in for free!

History / heritage

There are a plethora of Blue Plaque properties in the Chelsea area – you can wander and see the homes of Alfred Hitchcock, George Eliot, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Oscar Wilde amongst many others!

Horticulture

You cannot, of course, talk about things to do in Chelsea and not mention the world famous Chelsea Flower Show. The pride of the Royal Horticulture Society, where every year thousands of people from all over the world come to see the grounds of The Royal Hospital Chelsea transformed by the vibrant floral displays and show gardens. All designed and constructed by some of the world’s greatest established horticultural designers, along with the most promising floral artists breaking through!
